How the Hungarian education system works
Hungarian children up to the age of 16 have to go to primary school. Primary school is divided into lower and upper level and lasts eight years. After a child completes primary school, they are required to attend a secondary school for at least a two-year period.
Is kindergarten compulsory in Hungary?
As part of the Hungarian education system, kindergarten (óvoda) is not compulsory for children younger than five years of age. Although children between three and six years old have the right to attend preschool, they are not obligated to do so until they turn five. When children start kindergarten in Hungary, they are prepared for the demands of the primary school environment.
How primary schools work in Hungary
Children in Hungary attend primary school for at least eight years. They attend class 1-4 during the lower level years and class 4-8 during the upper level of primary school. Children that have finished their eighth year of school can choose to attend a high school or a vocational school as part of their compulsory basic education.
How does school enrollment work in Hungary?
Hungarian law guarantees compulsory basic education, although private schools are allowed to charge a tuition fee. Although parents can enrol their children in any school of their choice, schools are required to take in all children within their area. Before children can enroll in high schools or vocational schools withing the Hungarian education system, they are required to pass an exam of which the Ministry of Education sets the standards.
How vocational schools work in Hungary
Vocational schools double-qualify students, issuing them with the Matura (university entrance) after the first four years of school, and certifying them as skilled workers. It is estimated that one-third of all primary school students choose to attend vocational schools that form part of the Hungarian education system. Vocational schools come in three types:
- Technician training school
- Skilled-worker training school
- Middle vocational educational school
Special schools in Hungary
Hungary’s special schools cater to the needs of disadvantaged or disabled students between the ages of 14 and 16. Students that attend special schools are issued with certificates confirming their graduation after completing two years of schooling with the special school.
Further education in Hungary
Aside from primary school and high school or vocational school, Hungary also has a range of further education programs designed for adults who wish to return to education or gain more qualifications. Adults can apply to various Hungarian education institutes to complete qualifications such as:
- Elementary school
- The Matura (for adults with elementary school graduation)
- The Matura (for adults that are skilled professionals)
- Graduation form professional school
- Technician qualification
